Breastfeeding Calorie Calculator — Daily Energy Needs
Calculate your daily calorie needs while breastfeeding, including metabolic baseline (TDEE) and lactation energy premiums.
Lactation Energy Requirements
Producing breast milk is a metabolically demanding process. Breastfeeding mothers require extra energy to support milk synthesis without depleting their own nutrient reserves.
Calculating Baseline and Premium
Daily calorie targets are calculated by establishing your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, then adding a lactation energy premium:
- 0 to 6 Months (Exclusive): An additional +500 kcal/day is recommended.
- 7 to 12 Months (Exclusive): An additional +400 kcal/day is recommended, as the baby begins solid foods.
- Partial Breastfeeding: A reduced premium of +200 to +250 kcal/day is calculated for mixed feeding.
Nutrient Density and Hydration
While calorie intake is important, the nutritional quality of those calories is crucial. Focus on protein, healthy fats, calcium, iron, and staying well-hydrated, as fluid intake supports milk volume.
Frequently Asked Questions
Lactation burns significant calories, which can assist in post-pregnancy weight loss. However, severe calorie restriction is not recommended, as it can compromise milk supply.
Aim for about 3 liters of fluids daily. A good habit is to drink a glass of water every time you nurse your baby.
Yes, many OBGYNs recommend continuing prenatal or postnatal vitamins during breastfeeding to prevent micronutrient deficiencies.
