Creatinine Clearance Calculator (Cockcroft-Gault)

Calculate your Creatinine Clearance (CrCl) online using the Cockcroft-Gault equation to monitor renal clearance.

Creatinine Clearance (Cockcroft-Gault)
76 mL/min
Your creatinine clearance indicates normal renal function.

What is Creatinine Clearance?

Creatinine clearance (CrCl) estimates the rate at which the kidneys clear creatinine from the blood. It is a key clinical metric used to evaluate renal function and adjust drug dosages.

The Cockcroft-Gault Equation

This calculator utilizes the Cockcroft-Gault equation, which was developed in 1976. While newer equations like CKD-EPI are preferred for diagnosing chronic kidney disease, the Cockcroft-Gault formula remains a standard reference in FDA drug labels for calculating renal drug clearance and determining dosage adjustments.

The equation is: CrCl = ((140 - Age) * Weight in kg) / (72 * Serum Creatinine) (multiplied by 0.85 for females).

Creatinine Clearance vs. eGFR

Unlike eGFR, which is normalized for Body Surface Area (BSA) and expressed per 1.73m², the Cockcroft-Gault equation calculates raw clearance in mL/min. This distinction is important when dosing medications for individuals with body sizes that differ significantly from the average.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many drug dosing guidelines established during FDA trials were calibrated using the Cockcroft-Gault formula, so clinicians continue to use it to ensure safe drug dosing.
High muscle mass, high dietary protein intake, or active supplement use can raise serum creatinine levels, potentially skewing clearance estimates.
Renal clearance is generally staged as normal (>90 mL/min), mild impairment (60-89 mL/min), moderate impairment (30-59 mL/min), severe impairment (15-29 mL/min), or kidney failure (<15 mL/min).
