What is the GAD-7?

The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) is a self-administered 7-item questionnaire designed to screen for and measure the severity of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in clinical and research settings.

The Science of Anxiety Screening

The GAD-7 evaluates cognitive and physical symptoms of anxiety, such as excessive worry, trouble relaxing, irritability, and fear of impending doom. Scores range from 0 to 21:

  • 0–4: Minimal anxiety.
  • 5–9: Mild anxiety.
  • 10–14: Moderate anxiety.
  • 15–21: Severe anxiety.

A score of 10 or higher is a common threshold indicating that further clinical evaluation by a psychiatrist or therapist is warranted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stress is typically a reaction to an external trigger, whereas generalized anxiety features persistent, excessive worry about everyday events that is difficult to control and lasts for months.
Anxiety is highly treatable through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, lifestyle adjustments, and, when indicated, medications prescribed by a doctor.
The GAD-7 is validated primarily for adults. Specific pediatric screening tools (like the SCARED scale) are used for children and adolescents.
