HOMA-IR Calculator — Estimate Insulin Resistance

Calculate your HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance) score online using fasting insulin and fasting glucose levels.

Your HOMA-IR Index
1.9
Your insulin sensitivity is normal.

What is HOMA-IR?

HOMA-IR stands for Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance. It is a clinical calculation that estimates insulin sensitivity and pancreatic beta-cell function based on fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin levels.

The Metabolic Relevance of Insulin Resistance

Insulin is the hormone responsible for ushering glucose into your cells for energy. When cells become resistant to insulin, the pancreas must produce higher amounts to keep blood sugar stable. High HOMA-IR scores indicate insulin resistance, which is a key precursor to prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease.

Understanding the Formula

The standard HOMA-IR equation is: HOMA-IR = (Fasting Insulin (uIU/mL) * Fasting Glucose (mg/dL)) / 405. Optimal metabolic insulin sensitivity corresponds to a score below 1.0. Scores above 1.9 suggest early insulin resistance, while scores over 2.9 indicate significant metabolic resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A HOMA-IR score of less than 1.0 indicates optimal insulin sensitivity. A score between 1.0 and 1.9 is considered healthy, while above 1.9 indicates insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance is highly responsive to lifestyle changes: reduce refined carbohydrates, perform resistance training, prioritize sleep, and incorporate intermittent fasting.
Fasting glucose can remain normal for years even as insulin resistance develops, because the pancreas overproduces insulin to compensate. Testing insulin reveals this early strain.
